Butterflies ~ Ann Arbor Family Photographer

For the past three or four years, we have ordered caterpillars from Insect Lore. Within a couple weeks, 5 caterpillars arrived on our doorstep. My children loved waking up each morning and checking on the caterpillar’s growth. They were fascinated to watch the chrysalis form. The anticipation for the transformation was too much for my daughter to handle at times. When they finally emerged it was bittersweet. You can keep them in the habitat for a couple days, because they can’t fly until their wings dry. My daughter plucked the petals off the roses from our one blooming rose bush, mixed water and sugar to create nectar, and fed her butterflies hourly. She carefully dripped the home made nectar onto the petals each time. When it was time to let them go, we went out to the backyard to say goodbye. My son hadn’t been too interested in this part, surprisingly. He stuck around for a brief second. 🙂 As you can see, these moments were pure joy for my daughter. Then once all five were out of sight, the tears began. And. did. not. stop. for. hours. Poor girl. I assured her her painted lady butterflies would surely come back to find her one day.
